Germany will provide 115 million Euros for the WHO

At the ceremonial opening of the World Health Summit with 1,000 participants from politics, science, industry and civil society, Jens Spahn, the German Federal Minister of Health, announced that Germany will be supporting the World Health Organization (WHO) with 115 million Euros for the next four years. “Never before were we able to guarantee such a high and long-term support for the core mandate of WHO.” This announcement is a major step in assuring long-term predictable finances so that WHO will be able to meet the high expectations of the global public.

On the occasion of the 10th World Health Summit, the high-level keynote speakers agreed on the pioneering role that the World Health Summit has played in bringing together stakeholders from different sectors: “I am convinced that we can only implement the 2030 Agenda and make a real difference if – following the great example of the World Health Summit – all relevant actors get involved together”, Jens Spahn said.

The second day of the World Health Summit will put a focus on the crucial role of research and innovation, for example in vaccine development and distribution or in tackling the challenge of antimicrobial resistance.
The World Health Summit is being held under the high patronage of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron, and President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker.
